Travel and Accommodation
Come for the festival, stay for the week. So much to do, so little time. Barrier has dozens of walks, beaches and stories to discover, three days is the perfect introduction, but you’ll see so much more if you come for a week. Come early, leave late, or both. Hire a car and do some exploring, get your bearings and settle in to your accommodation. You can’t have too much of a good thing.
It is preferable that all visitors stay in the northern end of the island on the Saturday night to access transport and the Sunday walks easily. There are several accommodation options provided below.
Transport will be provided on the Saturday 29th April to pick up walkers from Claris Airport at 8.30am and 12pm. Transport will also be provided to drop walkers off at Claris airport midday Sunday 30th April.
Go Great Barrier Island
Do you need to hire/bring a car?
We’ve set up the festival so that you don’t need a car, but it depends where you stay and what you want to do.
There is no bus service on Great Barrier Island, and only a limited taxi/shuttle service that will be busy during the festival. We will provide your transport to and from each walk. If you are staying in Tryphena or Claris you should be able to walk to cafes, bars and shops. There are no businesses in Medlands.
If you are staying anywhere else you will need a car to get to the pick up points and/or the shops/cafes.
Mike Newman runs a taxi service FROM Port Fitzroy (closest settlement).
The contact number 4290 052 or 021 876 296
You will need to arrange your own shuttle from the airfield or wharf to your accommodation. Talk to your transport/accommodation provider about options.
Are DoC Huts an option?
DoC has some great huts on Barrier but they are far from the main villages. If you stay in a hut you will need a car and will spend a lot of time driving. Why not come early and stay in a hut for a few days before relocating to one of the main villages for the festival?
